Saw Cutting
Saw cutting is a fabrication or machining process that refers to the segmentation a work piece by using a saw blade to cut the material. The three most basic types of saws used for cutting in the machine shop environment include the continuous band saw, the cut-off saw and the cold saw. These machines are designed to complete the cut in a short time and at a desired level of quality.

The band saw is a machine that cuts the work piece or part with a hardened metal blade which sports serrated teeth. As the blade moves across the work piece slight downward pressure is applied. Each tooth that passes removes a small amount of material and since this saw utilizes a looped blade it provides a continuous cutting action. In an automatic band saw the work piece or length of material is automatically fed forward to ensure multiple cuts are made to a preset length. The material is held in a hydraulic vise which works in conjunction with the material feed and cut action. Proper setup and monitoring will ensure saw cut parts are produces with measurable, repeatable results.

The cut-off saw or chop saw utilizes a very thin abrasive wheel to saw cut the material. Very similar in configuration the cold saw utilizes spinning circular steel blades similar to those used in wood saws. Both the abrasive wheels and the circular steel blades of cut-offs and cold saws cut quickly and give an excellent saw cut finish.
